The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federal constitutional monarchy made up of a federation of seven hereditary tribal monarchy-styled political systems called Sheikhdoms. It is governed by a Federal Supreme Council made up of the ruling Sheikhs of Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Fujairah, Sharjah, Dubai, Ras al-Khaimah and Umm al-Quwain. The President and Vice President are elected by the Federal Supreme Council. Usually, a sheikh from Abu Dhabi holds the presidency and a sheikh from Dubai the prime minister ship.
The federal government is composed of three branches:
• Legislative: A Federal Advisory Council (FAC) and the advisory Federal National Council (FNC).
• Executive: The President, who is also commander-in-chief of the military, the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers.
• Judicial: The Supreme Court and lower federal courts.

Living in the UAE

Traditions & Culture:  The Culture of the United Arab Emirates is part of the culture of Eastern Arabia. Emirati culture is a blend of  Arabian, Islamic, and Persian cultures, with influences from the cultures of East Africa and the Indian Subcontinent. Food: The Emirati diet is a mixture of a Bedouin diet (meat and camel milk), a fishermen’s diet (fish), and a farmer’s diet (dates). These foods, along with key spices, such as cinnamon, saffron, and turmeric, form the basis of both historical and modern Emirati cuisine. Popular dishes include harees, fouga, kabsa, and luqemat. One of the best national dishes is stuffed camel cooked slowly over a pit of burning charcoal. Harees is also a national specialty; it is a porridge-like dish often served during Ramadan or during large celebrations like weddings. It is made with wheat, meat (or chicken), and salted water.

In Dubai, the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has the operations of public taxis, the Dubai Metro, the water transportation system, buses, and the Dubai Tram, under its purview.

  • Trains: The UAE does not have conventional rail transport. The Dubai Metro was inaugurated in 2009.
  • Buses: Buses in the UAE are safe, efficient, and clean, and drivers are trained in the skills of driving advanced vehicles. They are all equipped with air-conditioners, including the bus stations. For traveling from emirate to emirate, buses are the cheapest and most popular form of public transport.
  • Taxis: Taxis are still the most preferred public transport option in the UAE. The public taxis are efficient and clean, and fares depend on the duration of your ride.
  • Car-sharing services and Uber: Uber and Careem are the two major app-based taxi services in the UAE. Uber operates in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, while Careem operates also in Sharjah and Ajman. Unlike the public taxis, fares can go slightly up during peak hours and on certain days of the year, such as New Year’s Eve or during Eid.

Visa Process

Any International students who want to study in the UAE must obtain a UAE Student Visa. However, prior to that, they must get an offer letter from the institution of higher education in the UAE since it is the university that handles the visa application process.

Documents Needed:

  • Your passport, along with photocopies of your passport
  • Up to 12 passport-sized pictures. 
  • The letter of acceptance into the UAE university or college.
  • Proof of financial funds to cover your tuition fees and living expenses
  • A medical certificate, issued by a government-approved health center in the UAE. All applicants over the age of 18 have to undergo medical examinations for HIV, TB, Hepatitis B and C, Leprosy, and Syphilis.
  • Proof of accommodation, such as student accommodation or proof of tenancy

How Long is a UAE Student Visa Valid?

In most cases, a student visa is issued for one year, and it can be renewed annually for the entire duration of your studies. To renew a Student Visa, you have to obtain confirmation from your university that you are still a student.
